What our customers say: Thank you very much for your prompt and efficient service. The apple tree was a replacement for the one I bought from another company for a few pounds cheaper back in May. It was a miserable little stick with no leaves that broke off its graft after a month or so. Imagine my surprise when I received yours -- taller than me and already growing a basketful of apples! What can I say? Superior in every way. Regards, Jacqui

Acid Cooking Cherry - Smaller than its sweet cousins, the Morello cherry is self fertile and crops heavily in most parts of the country. Morello Cherry tolerates colder and wetter conditions than the sweet cherries. The cherries are pickable from the time their skin is dark red. At this stage, Morello cherries are sour and should be cooked (they make great cherry jam). However if a Morello cherry is left on the tree into August (by which time its skin will be practically black) it will be edible off the tree in the same way that a tart eating apple is.

A GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE. Fruit trees are grafted onto rootstocks. Rootstocks come in 5 sizes (2 for Cherries) see the chart below, all of our trees are labelled using these codes.

Until quite recently there was no point in trying to grow a sweet cherry in an average sized garden. The introduction of colt rootstock in the late 70's enables trees to be maintained at 4 metres.

If you require a smaller tree then look for the rootstock Giesla 5 which reaches around 3 metres when mature, Only the varieties Stella, Sunburst and Morello are available on this rootstock.

Plant trees or bushes in a sunny site with good air circulation and average to rich, well-drained soil. They prefer a soil ph of between 6.0 and 6.8 (slightly acidic).

Avoid low areas where frost and standing water can be a problem (especially for sweet types) or sites where cherries, peaches or plums have grown previously.
