Rapberry information - Canes Planted in Jan 2008

Raspberries throw new shoot from the roots and as they have only recently been planted and the soil temperatures are still very low it will take another month or so before you see signs of life. The old cane should be cut down to around an inch above the soil.
Make sure as well that they are not planted too deeply. The root system should only be around 3-4 inches below the surface.

Organic Coir Fibre Pots
For so many reasons it is time to start switching from growing plants and seedlings in plastic pots to growing in organic biodegradable containers.
Our containers are made from organically grown coconut husk fibres - coir fibre - with a minimal binding of biodegradable organic latex. The coir fibre pot is satisfyingly easier to plant, with no leftover black plastic trays and pots to permanently clutter our ever reducing landfills.
The coir material allows air and water to move through the pot while containing soil, and the plants do not have to be pulled from the pot at planting time. Plants grown in coir in the greenhouse have better root structures than those in plastic pots. Air pruning of the roots occurs once they grow through the walls of the pot, therefore other smaller roots develop as well. There is no root twirling, no root bound plants, no need to manipulate the root ball before planting, and certainly no root shock. Once the pot is planted in the ground, air pruned roots rapidly regenerate, and robust root growth has been seen after just 10 days.
The many benefits and advantages of Coir pots include minimising social cost, sound ecology and the simple satisfying 'look' of the growing seedling and plant - while giving a totally distinctive impression to all your production.
Washed for over 4 months in fresh water, and then heat treated, by our growers in Sri Lanka coir is a constantly renewed resource. Firm believers in trade being by far the best aid, coir affords a significant opportunity for Sri Lanka both to recover and develop.
