Crab Apple Trees. Among the most beautiful of small trees, crab apples offer reliably copious blossom and fruit. Mainly grown for their ornamental appearance but have the added value of blossom in the Spring followed by fruits in the Autumn. Crab Apple trees are also good pollinators for other fruiting apple trees.

Blackmoor Nursery is one of very few Nurseries in the UK offering gardeners the opportunity to buy Malus Crab Apple fruit trees direct from our Nursery. 

All orders are despatched in one delivery. If your order contains both bare root and container grown plants then we can only despatch when all plants are ready. 

Any Bare Root fruit trees - Availability means available for supply from Nov to May.

Any Container grown fruit trees - Availability means available for supply now. 

How tall will my Malus Crab Apple tree grow? 

A guide to selection, rootstocks come in 5 sizes see the chart below, all of our trees are labelled using these codes. Our Crab Apples are grown on the MM106 rootstock.

Semi vigorous, Approximate height 3-4 metres when mature.

Bare Root = Field grown trees that have been freshly lifted and supplied with no soil around the roots. Only available during the dormant period November-April
10 Litre = Container grown and can be planted all year round. The size refers to the number of litres of compost that the container holds.
1 Year Maiden = A one year old tree and the size depends on the variety but in general they will be 125cm in height and will have some side branches.

Malus toringo Aros Crab Apple - A stunning dwarf upright tree ideal for patio growing or small spaces. Leaves emerge a shiny dark burgundy to black turning slightly green with age. Bright purple/pink flowers in the spring turn to very dark red/maroon fruits in the autumn. Crab apple Aros received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.  Height and Spread (after 10 years): 2.5m x 1.5-2m Malus Aros Growing Tips: Crab Apples are self-fertile, and very useful as pollinators for a variety of fruit trees. Full sun or part shade lover, best grown in fertile, moist, deep, loamy soils. Requires minimal pruning in late winter or spring to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.

Crab Apple Golden Hornet
Golden Hornet Crab Apple - This charming Malus provides beautiful displays of seasonal colour. As springtime matures at the end of April, Golden Hornet erupts with brilliant white flowers that envelop the entire canopy. These are tinged with wonderful shades of water-washed pink and subtle lilac. A small upright tree producing bright yellow fruits in the autumn. One of the best fruiting crabs for general planting. Golden Hornet fruits are good for jellies. Golden Hornet is a very good variety for cross pollinating other Apple trees.

John Downie Crab Apple - Perhaps the best fruiting crab apple. John Downie has beatiful white flowers in April followed by large bright orange to red fruits in the autumn. Malus John Downie have a very refreshing flavour that make them ideal for jams and jellies.

Crab Apple Red Sentinel
Red Sentinel Crab Apple - One of the most ornamental crab apple varieties, bearing pink-white flowers in late spring, followed by masses of glossy, round, red fruit. The fruits remain on the branches throughout autumn and winter, complementing the autumnal shades of the leaves before falling. Providing year-round interest, it’s perfect for a small gardens and the birds will love the fruits from December - January. Grow Malus x robusta ‘Red Sentinel’ in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Remove dead, diseased and crossing branches in winter.
