Olympic is a wonderful Asian Pear which produces huge, round, russet covered pears that almost look like apples. The fruits can be the size of large oranges and are very crunchy, crisp and juicy. Asian pears are renowned for their firm, crisp and sweet flavour and are to be enjoyed fresh or eaten in salads. Can be kept for many months in the fridge or cool cellar. In spring the tree is covered in clusters of large, pure white flowers and the leaves have excellent autumn colour. Self fertile.

A Medlar is an old and exotic looking fruit, but it is a native of Europe and not the tropics. The medlar is russet brown and the size of a small apple, and the seeds are visible through the gaping cups below the calyx. Even odder is the preparation for serving. The fruits are picked in November and then allowed to decay (blet) for several weeks. The flesh turns brown, soft and sweet. It is then scooped out with a spoon.
