Frequently Asked Questions in buying and growing a fruit tree. If your question is not answered below please call our friendly advice line on 01420 473576.

Am I able to turn up and select my own fruit tree?

No, sorry we are not a Garden Centre or retail Nursery. Orders can be placed via our website and the collection option can be selected at the checkout. Your order will then be ready for you to collect during our normal opening hours which are Monday-Thursday 07.30-16.00 Friday 07.30-15.00. Our plants are grown in fields that can be 2 miles away from our office so it is not possible to just turn up and select your own trees.

When will Bare Root Trees and Soft Fruit plants be available to order for this Winter?

In September all of our field grown trees and soft fruit plants will go onto our website. As soon as they have completed their growing season they are stock counted and will then be available to pre order.

What to do with bare root trees on delivery?

If the ground is frozen when your plants arrive please open and check the contents, remove any plants in plastic containers and temporarily store any bare root plants in a frost free unheated place such as a garage or shed until there is a thaw. Please keep the plastic bags wrapped round their roots to avoid them drying out and soak the roots for 2 hours once a week until you can plant them and re-wrap them.

Do you supply a printed catalogue?

We no longer produce a paper catalogue as they are expensive and out of date as soon as they are printed. All of our stock can be viewed and purchased from our website which is updated daily and this avoids any out of stock items being ordered and having to send substitutions.

Do you grow Espalier or Fan trained fruit trees?

Yes, all the trained fruit trees are in their own section. Trained Fruit Trees

Can fruit trees be grown in containers?

Yes, all fruit trees can be grown in pots as long as they are large enough. As far as the type of container, clay pots are heavy and stable; plastic is durable, light and easier to manage. For most fruit, choose pots 50-60cm in diameter.

I wish to collect my order from the Nursery, is this possible?

Yes you can order on the website and select the collection option at the checkout. Please allow us 24 hours notice, excluding weekends and bank holidays, to arrange for your plants to be ready on your arrival.

I have placed an order with you, when can I expect delivery?

We are striving to fulfil orders within 5 working days.

How much is the delivery charge?

The delivery charge is worked out from the weight and the size of the plant. We have several rates that apply to UK mainland addresses. A delivery charge of £9.95 is for a single tree orders (except any trained trees). The lower postal rates will be applied to smaller orders of the lighter plants like currants, raspberries, gooseberries, blackberries, asparagus and strawberries although larger orders will go into the £11.40 rate. Once you have put together your order the delivery charge will show before payment. See more info here

Can you recommend a variety for me?

It is hard to recommend varieties as this is down to personal taste and each variety has its own unique taste. You can see in the best sellers our most popular varieties. The easiest variety of apple to try growing is Falstaff.

How far apart should I plant my trees?

The basic rule is that whatever height your tree will eventually reach will also be your planting distance. For example M26 will grow to around 3 metres and so will need a planting distance of 3 metres, M27 will grow 1.8 metres and will need a planting distance of 1.8 metres.

Are you able to deliver your fruit trees to Europe?

No sorry. Due to GB leaving the EU we now have no delivery options available to us due to plant health export restrictions. From 1 January 2021, all regulated plants and plant products exported from England, Scotland or Wales to the EU will be subject to EU import controls in line with goods exported from the rest of the world. A phytosanitary (health) certificate (PC) would need to be obtained by us for each order and the cost for this is too expensive for each individual order.

Loyalty Reward Points - Could you explain what reward points are and how to spend them?

Once the points are validated they are available in your account to spend. You need to have an account with us for points to be registered.

How do I prune my fruit trees?

Our Fruit Growers Handbook (which can be viewed online) explains pruning of all the fruits that we supply. A link to the handbook is here

Do I need to be in to sign for the delivery?

No, our couriers will leave if it is safe to do so. You can always leave a note on the door for the courier to leave somewhere. By the back door or in shed or whatever suits.

What do the pollination groups mean?

Most suburban situations provide good pollen due to the close proximity of other gardens. It is not always necessary to have pollinators if the bees and other pollinating insects are generous with their visits. If you have no other Apple tree close by then select two varieties in the same group or the adjoining group ie group 2 and 4 will pollinate group 3 as will any others in group 3. Some varieties are self fertile.

What is a rootstock?

All fruit trees are grafted onto different rootstocks. It is the rootstock that determines the mature height that the tree will grow into. On the left hand side of the product page there is a rootstock guide.

What is the difference between a Bare Root tree and a Container grown tree?

A container grown tree can be planted at any time of the year. They should start to fruit the following summer after planting. A Bare Root tree is grown in a field and can only be lifted and sent out during the winter months. They should not be allowed to fruit the first summer after planting. Generally both trees will be around the same size.
