The emerald to green leaves are up to 18cm long with white felted undersides, and are composed of three, coarsely toothed, rounded, ovate or heart-shaped leaflets.
In early summer the small, star-like, whitish to pink, self fertile flowers emerge shyly, encased in a calyx - bristly armour made up of five long, triangular bracts. Small, glistening, conical, orange-red fruit follow in early August. These remain almost surrounded by the calyx until they are ripe.
You can eat them straight off the canes or cook them in the same way as raspberries. Plant the Japanese wineberry in adequately drained but fertile soil, preferably in a sheltered place. You will get the best fruit against a sunny wall.
You can tie the canes along wires, cutting out those that have fruited and tying in the replacements. Because the stems are vigorous you can pinch them back in Spring to encourage branching.
Native to Korea and China as well as Japan, this vigorous deciduous shrub grows to 2.5m or 3m tall. It has orange to red bristles thick as down on its arching stems and protective calyces. These stems show up well in Winter, especially when sunlight strikes them. Just like the raspberry it is biennial, that is, the canes grow one year and fruit the next.

Japanese Wineberry | Genus Rubus | Rubus phoenicolasius
This is a climbing shrub that produces large trusses of unbelievably sweet orange red to dark red berries of delicious flavour. Easy to grow. A good subject to grow against a fence. Though it is uncommon it is no more difficult to grow than a raspberry, which it is closely related. Ideal for planting against a wall or a fence or growing in a container.

Bought 2 of these in 2016 but they died within a few months of planting for no apparent reason, tried them again in 2017 and these later 2 plants are doing OK so far. To be completely honest not overly impressed by the fruit we've had from it this Summer, much prefer raspberries, but interesting to grow something a little different and the plant does look very pretty when in flower and as the fruits are developing.

Purchased 2016. Grew very well first summer and produced fruit- excellent taste (smaller, sweeter than a raspberry, grew a deeper red)- pretty bud first. I planted against a garden arch in a sunny position. Looks to have survived the first winter in the north.

First time even seeing one of these so perhaps a gamble. Really healthy good sized plant. Looking forward to the fruit.

I come back to Blackmoors time and time again because the fruit stock is second to none; the customer service is excellent; the packaging is sturdy; despatch is swift ie a few days rather than weeks. Again, this Wineberry I have just received is one fine specimen. Thankyou so much everyone at Blackmoors.

Thank you for your delivery, I was impressed with the products and would like to mention in particular the careful and intelligent packing, which ensured that trees, shrubs, stakes and smaller plants arrived safely and in excellent condition. The bare rooted plants were carefully wrapped so did not dry out even though I was not able to plant immediately. Thank you !

Purchased two 1 year bare root plants and one 2-litre pot plant in Dec 2010. Unfortunately one of the bare root plants didn't even make it through the summer of 2011 (both bare root plants planted in same position and treated identically). The other two faired a bit better!

Thanks again. I ordered lots of plants off you and there all doing really well, you even sent some extra raspberry canes in the order about 3 or 5, the Japanese wine berry looks fantastic. You were recommended to me and I can see why the plants are great. I go on a forum called the grape vine on growfruitandveg.co.uk where people swap advice recommend suppliers and things. I have recommended you to people on the forum and I know some have placed orders. Keep up the great plants I am already looking at getting a Sunberry and maybe I will pick some others too for October November
